We’ve been here for a whole week! It’s been an intense and amazing experience. We got our local phone numbers, which helps with pretty much everything else. I requested, then picked up, and activated my citizenship card, which was a crucial step in opening a bank account. Despite the challenges, we made progress with family regroupment for Matthew and the kids by visiting different government offices. We are in the process of gathering US documents to get that sorted. Additionally, we’ve had an exciting time exploring car options, visiting various dealers, and considering leasing vs. buying. We’ve now narrowed down to two cars and are looking forward to finalizing the purchase next week.

It’s been absolutely wonderful to have such incredible support from our friends as we settle in. Our kids have been having an amazing time with them while Matthew and I take care of all the necessary but tedious errands. Yesterday, Lorena and I had a great time shopping for school supplies for the kids. It was so helpful to have someone explain some of the items on the list. Anna and Bia hit it off immediately and even had a sleepover. The two of them are so similar in personality and interests, I can already imagine them being lifelong friends. Meanwhile, David joined forces with Vitor and his classmate, Oscar, to dig the biggest sand pit at the beach. They also went crab hunting in the marsh waters where the Albufeira lake meets the ocean. Lucas and Isabella joined in on the fun, enjoying beach paddle games, soccer, and plenty of playground playtime with the older kids. We’ve also had a few trips to the mall, where the kids indulged in ice cream and some window shopping. Oh, and the grocery store! The mall has a huge one, and it’s surprisingly fun to wander the aisles and explore the unique products on offer. The seafood display is truly impressive. I have to admit, I initially felt overwhelmed by the choices and ended up grabbing a seafood cooking magazine at the checkout line.

This first week has been amazing! Alongside our work, we’ve had the chance to embrace the beach life. Matthew and I have been starting our days with invigorating morning walks, runs, or swims at the beach. We’ve visited the nearby Carcavelos beach multiple times, and we’ve even tested out the easy 1-mile walk to get there. On Sunday, we ventured an hour away to Lagoa da Albufeira with our friends and enjoyed a fantastic day at the beach. The kids had a great time playing at the lake, while we soaked in the beauty of the rough sea and its stunning waves. Later in the afternoon, we were treated to the lively sight of kite surfers having fun on the waves.

Every Thursday morning, the vibrant open-air market attracts locals and visitors alike to explore its diverse offerings. Today, Matthew and I eagerly ventured to the market, brimming with anticipation. On one side of the street, a delightful array of farmer’s market produce greeted us: luscious fruits and vegetables, aromatic herbs, farm-fresh eggs, golden honey, artisanal bread, a variety of cheeses, and flavorful cured meats. On the opposite side, a bustling market showcased a wealth of goods, from trendy apparel and soft linens to sturdy suitcases, stylish footwear, chic handbags, and charming dinnerware. Witnessing everyone navigate the market, laden with their bags or carts, added to the lively atmosphere. Cash transactions abound, infusing the market with a sense of tradition and community.

There’s more to share, but it will have to wait as the kids are waiting for me to join them at the playground across the street.
