In mid-October, we took a day trip to Peniche, a small fishing town on the west coast of Portugal. We visited the lighthouse Farol do Cabo Carvoeiro and its surrounding cliffs; we explored the Fort of Peniche, which now houses the National Museum Resistência e Liberdade; we enjoyed a delicious seafood lunch; we treated ourselves to some local sweets; and we finished the day at the beach.

One cool thing about this town is how the fishwives kept their families going with their awesome lace-making skills—what we call “renda de bilros.” Right in the town square, there’s this amazing statue of a “rendeira” (lacemaker) that really shows off their hard work and talent. And isn’t it funny that my home state of Ceará has its own strong tradition of talented “rendeiras,” creating stories of grit and creativity that are all part of our culture?

Até a próxima
